Daft Punk split after 28 years

Daft Punk, the French electronic music duo split today after 28 years. The two broke the news on the 22nd February 2021 on YouTube. They posted a video at 3pm (BST) titled ‘Daft Punk – Epilogue’.

The video is 8 minutes long. It starts with both the musicians, Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo walking in the desert in their signature robot outfits. They say goodbye to each other before one of them self-destructs.

The band confirmed the split to the BBC today.

Many people have acknowledged the bands success on twitter. Jon, @MrDalekJD, wrote ‘Genuine sadness. These guys will be musical legends forever’.

The band was formed in Paris in 1993. They hit the charts with many songs. Their biggest song, ‘Get Lucky’ featuring Pharrell Williams and Nile Rodgers, was released in 2013 and now has over 500 million streams on YouTube. The song ‘Get Lucky’, is off the most recent album by the pair, ‘Random Access Memories’.

In the 28 years, Thomas and Guy-Manuel have had 12 Grammy nominations, which they won 6 of. They have produced 4 total studio albums, and also come out with the films, ‘Daft Punk: Revealed’ and ‘Daft Punk’s Electroma’, as well as the documentary called: ‘Daft Punk Unchained’.
